REVIEW SUMMARY
Jared Hess’ A Minecraft Movie is creatively crafted with vibrant colours, rich details, and a playful touch of silliness. It’s a family-friendly romp that clearly has its sights set on fans of the beloved video game. Yep, this is very much a “for the fans, not the critics” kind of film, loaded with Easter eggs, call-backs, and clever nods that will surely delight anyone who’s ever spent time building in Minecraft’s blocky universe. At its core, the movie celebrates creativity and craftsmanship - especially in kids. And while the themes ring true, the plot itself is admittedly thin and fairly predictable. And let's just say that not all the characters are given equal footing. This is essentially the Jason Mamoa and Jack Black show. However, it’s crystal clear that the cast was having a blast, with everyone, including a cheeky Jennifer Coolidge, delivering delightful energy. Unfortunately, the can be quite humor is hit-or-miss, leaning heavily into the quirky, awkward style familiar to fans of Napoleon Dynamite – our director’s earlier work. Still, the visuals more than make up for any comedic misfires. The expansive Minecraft world is brought to life in visually stunning ways, with a seamless blend between live-action performances and CGI environments. It just works somehow. So, while not a perfect build, A Minecraft Movie is an entertaining 1 hour and 40-minute journey through the Overworld—one that’s sure to charm fans of the game and ignite imaginations young and old.
