REVIEW SUMMARY

A Quiet Place: Day One is a fairly scary spinoff/prequel that’s worth making noise over. And while there are lots of suspense-drenched frights to be had, what really makes this installment work are the excellent performances put forth by Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn (and Frodo the cat – seriously, though). The human pair are exceptionally strong here, making their screen time as emotionally charged as possible. And, seeing as how this film is more character driven than you might expect, that’s a really good thing. Don’t be too disappointed that the alien monsters are mostly kept in the background, the previous instalments took a very similar approach – and they were better for it. It all adds to a genuine connection with the characters and, more importantly, a want to see them survive. And with some stellar directing from Michael Sanoski, the film actually looks and sounds better than the others. There’s an impressive balance between the movie’s expansiveness and intimacy. And while there is certainly more that we could have been told or shown in the picture, the restraint is appreciated. After all, it’s always best to keep the audience wanting more. And what can I say, I definitely do...
