REVIEW SUMMARY

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a gloriously subversive cinematic spectacle with dazzle to spare. Yep, what could have simply been a generic adventure set within the vast IP of Mattel’s Barbie, instead becomes a multilayered meta-comedy with resonating messages for days. It’s a movie that takes large narrative risks, but never once abandons the vibrant and wholesome Barbie brand. In fact, it elevates it. The film celebrates Barbie’s legacy, but it also questions the intent of her creation. There’s also a pretty big microscope placed on society’s misogyny and toxic masculinity issues. But, as you might imagine, the “girl power” theme is most prevalent. However, with all these themes at play, the movie does lose focus at times (especially near the end), making a few sub-plots and side characters feel insignificant to the grand scheme of things. Regardless, there is no denying the visual splendor on display. The production design is next level here, making Barbieland a vibrant and pink (so very pink) feast for the eyeballs. That’s ditto for costume and hair design as well! And while Margot Robbie makes for an immaculate real-life incarnation of Barbie, it’s actually Ryan Gosling’s Ken who steals the show. Gosling’s performance runs the gamut from sugary sweet to tormentedly troubled. Of course, they are not alone, as the movie is littered with great actors with wonderful takes on their respective characters (look out for Kate McKinnon’s weird Barbie). So yes, it is safe to say that Gerwig’s Barbie is likely going to be the most imaginative and magical viewing experience you’ll have all year. Life in plastic – it truly is fantastic!
