This latest iteration of Cheaper by the Dozen is a wholesome, yet wholly bland remake. In fact, it’s a film with little to no effort made to make it anything but a formulaic retread. Sorry to say, but things are superficial to the nth degree here. And the “comedy,” well, it’s as cringey as it gets (yet another “silly adult dance off?” really?). Picture an episode of that old TV show 7^th Heaven, but add in Zach Braff. I almost feel bad for Braff, who at least looks like he is trying to have fun with things. Unfortunately, everything about this movie is nauseatingly wholesome and aggravatingly obnoxious. Will kids like it? Maybe. Although, the young characters aren’t given any chance to really connect with their potential young audience. It’s all very surface-level fluff. The filmmakers surely get points for adding an abundance of diversity this time around though. But, it once again becomes a missed opportunity as they don’t do anything with that. And with the lack of an interesting narrative, overall focus, and any sense of pacing, this becomes a bit of a forgettable mess. Yes, Cheaper by the Dozen gets the cheap part right!
