REVIEW SUMMARY
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is a gloriously crafted stop-motion treat that flies a little too close to retread territory. That’s because ethe story here is very reminiscent of the first installment. But, since that movie was a whopping 23-years-ago, I’m guessing not many will notice. Speaking of that first film, there’s no need to have seen it or revisit it, they do a great job of recapping everything you need to know in the first 2 minutes. What you should know, however, is that this film is basically Mission: Impossible with Claymation chickens – and it works. There’s plenty of British humor and whimsy to go around – a nice mix of jokes for the adults and kiddie crowd. The plot is fine, delivering nice messages around parenthood and belonging. There’s also the welcome addition of Bella Ramsey as a plucky new heroine of sorts. And while some of the OG voice cast has changed, look for plenty of nostalgia and call backs (again, maybe a bit too much). But, the real appeal here is the unique and beautiful animation. There have certainly been some advancements in the stop-motion field as of late, and this film shows the vibrant results. It really is a great film to behold – even if the plot could have used some feathering.
