REVIEW SUMMARY
Jeff Chan’s Code 8: Part 2 is another example of Lo-fi Sci-fi done right! This welcome follow-up to the 2019 hidden gem that was Code 8, once again puts us in a very gritty world filled with superhero-adjacent intrigue. And while it’s nowhere near a big budget Hollywood blockbuster in terms of scale, the movie is better for it. The rawness of the futuristic world we’re witness to is palpable and lived in. There’s an authenticity to its simplicity. The focus, of course, is on the characters. And while everyone (including the Amell boys) do a truly decent job, the narrative is a little too stale this time around. There’s also some heart missing to the proceedings. Luckily, the themes and sci-fi allegories are timely and ripe for dissection – especially around the subject of surveillance and state policing. In short, it’s interesting. And, you will have no problem investing in it for the breezy 1 hour 40-minute runtime. So, thankyou Netflix, for giving us another go-around in this indie sci-fi world of interest. One can only hope our future holds a part 3!
