REVIEW SUMMARY
Unsettling in all the best ways, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future is a bouquet of body-horror delights. Yes, this is a return to the Cronenberg of old. The film is not only filled with wonderfully disturbing images (if you like that sort of thing), but it’s layered with interesting ideas and themes. There are some truly captivating concepts about human evolution and our own place in a future world. And, in many ways, the movie is a love letter to artists. No, for real. Cronenberg certainly has some new things to say, and he tells it to us with unflinching imagery. Ok, so maybe he shows us a little too much. Like the visionary director’s other flicks, nothing is left to the imagination. On the performances front, Viggo Mortenson and Kristen Stewart steal things with some respectively nuanced executions. The pair even have some genuine chemistry together, this despite a rather large age gap. But, it’s the grotesque pictures and haunting images that will be remembered most of all. Just do yourself a favor and maybe skip the cinema snacks while watching. The “ick-factor” is cranked up to the maximum high!
