SYNOPSIS
Is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Stephen King, which is a sequel to his 1977 novel The Shining. The film combines elements of King's novel and its 1980 film adaptation directed by Stanley Kubrick.
Struggling with alcoholism, Dan Torrance remains traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child. His hope for a peaceful existence becomes shattered when he meets Abra, a teen who shares his gift of the "shine." Together, they form an unlikely alliance to battle the True Knot, a cult whose members try to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.
REVIEW SUMMARY
Doctor Sleep, the 42-years-later sequel to The Shining, ultimately succeeds in combining the best of both Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick's visions. That is to say, you are in for some truly stellar supernatural frights and visual mastery with this one. Admittedly though, this film does suffer from some stark unevenness, in that the first part feels substantially different from what we get in the second half. You see, director Mike Flanagan starts us off with a rather plodding character study, only to bluntly switch things to a road trip / revenge storyline. Regardless, the 2 and a ½ hour runtime never becomes a hindrance, as things always remain enthralling in the plot department (in spite of those jarring narrative jumps). That continuous enjoyment can also be attributed to some A-grade performances, including a devilishly mesmerizing turn by Rebecca Ferguson as “Rose the Hat” (never have I been so attracted and scared of someone at the same time). McGregor also impresses with a multilayered portrayal of the tormented Danny Torrance in his adult life - no easy feat, although one he makes look so. And while the movie also wraps itself in poignant themes surrounding life and death, Doctor Sleep will perhaps best be remembered for not f***ing up our love of its predecessor. And for that, I think I speak for everyone when I say: shine on!
