REVIEW SUMMARY

A visual feast, Elemental is a reverent and charming Pixar rom-com. But, like all Pixar movies, there is more to things than meets the eye. And in this case – a lot more. In addition to the forbidden love stuff, we get an allegory about co-existing amongst different cultures. There’s even a bit of commentary on infrastructure care. But, the biggest love letter this movie sends along is to the immigrant experience. It especially speaks to immigrant parents and the generational gaps / relationships with their children. Needless to say, this will strongly resonate with some more than others. But is there too much going on? Yeah, kinda. But it’s all very endearing – if not familiar. It also helps that the voice actors have great chemistry with one another (the key to making the us care about the relationships). There’s also something to be said about the mesmerizing “elemental world” it takes place in. It’s clear the filmmakers had a blast playing with all the (ahem) elements at their disposal, making for plenty of fun to be found around every corner. So yes, expect environmental jokes and gags aplenty. But as interesting as it all is, it is the gorgeous animation that stands out the most. The film is dripping with vibrancy, making each of the elements shine in their own way. So while it's perhaps not Pixar’s greatest achievement in their stellar catalogue, it’s certainly one of the most breathtaking!
