REVIEW SUMMARY
Sorry to say horror fans, but Fantasy Island makes for one major genre fantasy fail. From the director of the equally abysmal Truth or Dare, comes yet another disappointing outing from the previously stellar folks at Blumhouse (what's happening over there - why the sudden down turn after hits like Get Out and Split?). And no, this film isn't a nostalgic cinematic throwback to Aaron Spelling's 1970's primetime Drama of the same name (if only we were so lucky). What we get instead is a high concept horror flick with head scratching supernatural elements mixed in. Now admittedly, the bonkers plot does show potential at the start, but it's sadly all but wasted on the lame group of main characters and a slew of nonsensical "twists." To say the story goes off the rails in the final act is perhaps an understatement for the ages. Going back to the aforementioned characters, there's seriously not a likeable one in the bunch. I mean, I guess you can root for the island. But, will you get scared? No. Mildly entertained? Barely. Disappointed? One hundred percent!
