REVIEW SUMMARY

An earnest enough coming-of-age/coming out drama, Golden Delicious is sure to resonate with its audience. And how could it not with its many universal themes and situations at play. Even if it’s not exactly what you experienced (or are experiencing), there’s still plenty of parallels to connect with. Of course, there’s a nice cultural spin to it all, thanks to the Asian-Canadian family at the forefront. Cardi Wong is also endearing as our lead Jake, as he navigates the turmoil of young adulthood in a convincing manner. Unfortunately, the film veers a little too much into the lane of a TV series melodrama. I felt like I was watching an episode of Degrassi on more than a few occasions. It’s also fairly predictable (ok, very predictable), and follows the “self-discovery formula” a little too closely. But, with enough charm and likeable characters to root for (not to mention a few spicy scenes), it manages to stand on its own.
