REVIEW SUMMARY
Neil Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo is nothing short of an adrenaline drenched underdog story with plenty to cheer about! Yep, while the racing sequences are rousing and exhilarating (as expected), it’s the true-to-life human story that cements things as a feelgood and crowd-pleasing viewing experience. Ok, yes, many of the side characters are greatly underdeveloped and given the broadest of strokes, but, our main duo, David Harbour’s Jack and Archie Madekwe’s Jann, are excellent together. Their interactions as their relationship evolves are full of genuine heart and emotion. Is the plot hackneyed at times? No doubt, but there’s also comfort in that predictability. Also know that they play a little fast and loose with the real-life story, but what “inspired by true events” Hollywood adaptation doesn’t? There’s also something to be said for the film’s direction. Blomkamp surely knows how to move around a camera and surely has an eye for infusing things with a raw and tangible feel. This is no exception. Add in a great soundtrack and some inspired visual effects, and you’ve got a late Summer treat you’ll want to race to. Just be sure to buckle up!
