REVIEW SUMMARY
Obnoxiously over the top, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard settles as a so-so sequel to a surprisingly fun first instalment. Let’s make one thing clear though, the cast is great. Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek are all very game here, each giving their respective characters some major gusto. But, try as they might, the material is just not anything special. Yep, it’s another big ‘ol preposterous re-hash I’m afraid. There’s lots of bullets and explosions to keep your attention, mind you, but we’ve seen it all before. The comedy is also very much hit or miss (ok, it’s mostly a miss). They actually go the slapstick route quite a bit, using poor Ryan Reynolds as a living crash test dummy throughout. Amusing? Sure. Laugh out loud funny? I’m afraid not. In fact, this feels like the type of movie that would have been more entertaining during the making of it. So, if they come out with another sequel for some reason (The Hitman’s Wife’s Gardner’s Daughter’s Bodyguard – or something), let’s just hope they give the creative a much needed overhaul!
