REVIEW SUMMARY

Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On is a sharply observed relationship study that replaces broad comedy with grown-up themes - boosted by terrific performances. Yes, this is undeniably an adult film, one that sits comfortably in the realm of grown-up storytelling, filled with thoughtful ideas about partnership, fulfillment, and the complicated Venn diagram where personal happiness and romantic commitment intersect. Cooper seems genuinely interested in what makes relationships work - or fail - and he allows the film to linger in that space with honesty. A major part of why the film works as well as it does is due to the actors operating at the top of their game. Will Arnett, in particular, surprises with a far more “toned-down” performance than audiences may expect. Known primarily for his overly comedic cadence and sarcastic bite, Arnett is given plenty of dramatic material to chew on. And, well, he rises to the occasion with grounded, vulnerable work. Laura Dern - ever reliable, ever compelling – also navigates her own character’s emotional arc with precision. Together, they form a duo that feels lived-in and fraught. As for Cooper behind the camera, he once again proves he has a strong, confident eye. He knows exactly where to place the camera. There’s an unmistakable sense of “aliveness” to the filmmaking. That said, if you’re coming into the movie expecting riotous comedy or a barrage of punchlines, it’s best you temper your expectations. While humor is certainly woven into the narrative, the film isn’t designed to leave audiences in fits of laughter. It’s amusing in spots, sure, but rarely laugh-out-loud funny. And honestly, that restraint works in the movie’s favor. Cooper isn’t aiming for a crowd-pleasing comedy after all, he’s delivering a sincere grown-up relationship takedown - one that values introspection over easy jokes.
