SYNOPSIS
Sue Ann is a loner who keeps to herself in her quiet Ohio town. One day, she is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town, to buy some booze for her and her friends, and Sue Ann sees the chance to make some unsuspecting, if younger, friends of her own. She offers the kids the chance to avoid drinking and driving by hanging out in the basement of her home, but soon Ma's hospitality starts to curdle into obsession.
REVIEW SUMMARY
Ma is a darkly comedic little horror gem that is wildly fun...while the party lasts. What we ultimately get is a film so unhinged, it will make you squirm, laugh, and wince – sometimes all at once. Unfortunately, like a bad party guest, it tends to overstay its welcome. More so, the film also suffers from its fair share of pacing issues and questionable camera work. But while things may wrap-up on a whimper, Octavia Spencer deserves an incredible amount of credit for delivering a deliciously disturbed performance that truly needs to be seen. Our teen characters are also likeable here, albeit cliched, but easy too root for nonetheless. It's these performances, especially Spencer's, that make it all worth while in the end. I mean, trust me when I say, no one throws a horror show basement party quite like Ma!
