REVIEW SUMMARY
When it comes to Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s Novocaine, the gimmicked-up premise delivers an action-packed punch of adrenaline – not to mention a helping of humor and romance. In short – it’s a lot of fun! The affable actor’s charms are on full display here, as is his commitment to the physicality of it all. And while he spends much of the film battered, bruised, and bloodied, he remains endlessly engaging – and easy to root for. It also helps that there is genuine chemistry with his on-screen love interest, played by Amber Midthunder. Beyond its entertaining leads, Novocaine benefits from its over-the-top, and dare I say diabolical ,violence. I mean, with a protagonist who can’t feel pain, it’s no surprise that the film leans heavily into creative and brutal action sequences to show this. And , well, it delivers in spades. Heck, there’s one sequence straight out of an alternate world R-rated Home Alone film. The movie also delivers a few twists and turns along the way. While nothing ground-breaking, these surprises are enough to keep the momentum going. If the movie has a weak spot, it’s no doubt in the third act. The finale unfortunately drags, and the resolution is fairly predictable. However, the film’s nonstop action and energy make up for it, ensuring that the journey is still filled with enjoyable energy. In the end, Novocaine proves to be an effortlessly entertaining—and dare I say, painless—watch!
