SYNOPSIS
Is based on the 2010 comic of the same name by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray.
Comic book creator Todd Walkley becomes popular due to his R-rated comics. His inspiration is from a real-life serial killer who committed gruesome acts of violence two decades ago. When he, his girlfriend Kathy, and producer Ezra travel back to the killer's town, they discover new crimes being committed recently. But what's scarier is how the new crimes look exactly like the scenes Todd drew in his comics.
REVIEW SUMMARY
If anything, Random Acts of Violence lives up to its title! That is to say, this gory love letter to horror comic books is as bloody and violent as you expect it to be (maybe more so). The film is actually littered with genuinely well-done practical effects. In a twisted sort of way, the nuances paid to the grotesque acts on display are rather “artistic” in their depictions. In fact, that very aspect ties into the story itself, with lots of other interesting elements explored as well (no spoilers, but this is not your typical dumbed-down slasher). I just wish they were explored a little bit more. You see, the movie is incredibly short (it clocks in at an anorexic 80-minutes), and to say it feels rushed, well, that would be an understatement. With that, there are really only 1 or 2 characters you’ll truly care about, with the rest feeling like underdeveloped background noise – Baruchel’s own character being one of them. What does work however, is the originality of it all, as this blood-happy horror flick definitely has style to spare.
