REVIEW SUMMARY
A cute and spicy progressive fairy-tale come to life, Red, White, and Royal Blue is an immensely enjoyable rom-com. Now, does it break new ground or change the formula in any meaningful way? Not quite. You see, despite it being a same-sex love story, the enemy-to-lovers story told is as tried and true of a romantic comedy recipe as they come. Its predictability is not a bad thing however, as the film manages to be endearing, earnest and playful in its approach – never succumbing to schmaltzy cheesiness. It helps immensely that our leads, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, have great chemistry with one another. Their moments of passion are more believable and palpable than most of the other rom-com couples we’ve gotten. And while the rest of the cast is fine in their respective roles, Uma Thurman is an absolute scene stealer as the President (even with her ridiculous put-on accent). And while Red, White and Royal Blue might lay the sickly sweetness on a little thick at times, it’s still as pleasant of a rom-com viewing experience as it gets!
