REVIEW SUMMARY

Absurd, frenzied, and gleefully ridiculous - which is precisely why it’s a wonderful Spongebob adventure! Oh yes, The Search for Squarepants delivers exactly what you expect (and not-so-secretly crave) from a feature-length outing with Sponge and his undersea buddies. There are hijinks for days, visual gags layered everywhere, and plenty to chuckle over. And yes, the grown-ups in the audience will find some sly laughs of their own. But, beyond the humor, the film dazzles with a gloriously vibrant aesthetic - its animation rendered with a richness and depth that feels both modern and true to the series’ eccentric spirit. It’s also crystal clear the voice cast is having a blast. The returning series regulars snap right back into their usual spot-on rhythm, while newcomers, like Mark Hamill, tear into their roles with gusto. Hamill’s take on the villainous Flying Dutchman is scene-stealing and deliciously theatrical, channeling shades of his iconic Joker performance - a comparison that’s no small compliment. For all its silliness and proudly sophomoric antics (and trust me, it leans boldly into that lane), the movie still works in earnest themes about conquering fear and believing in yourself. There’s a sweet spotlight on Spongebob and Patrick’s friendship, and the film practically doubles as a Mr. Krabs character study - offering a little more depth to the money-loving proprietor of the Krusty Krab. Will this movie change you or your kids’ lives? Not a chance. But will it entertain your pants off and leave you grinning like a goofball? You betcha.
