An offbeat existential horror, She Dies Tomorrow gets major points for originality. To say the film is bizarre however, would be putting it rather mildly. But, for the most part, it succeeds in its intended dreary dreamlike dread. The biggest issue the movie has going against it, though, is its (super) slow and methodical manner. I can appreciate a good “slow burner” as much as the next critic, but this one teeters on “sluggish slog” way too often. Don’t get me wrong, it’s all very interesting, but the prevalent snail’s pace will likely lose you at times. No doubt one of the high points of the film is Jane Adams, who delightfully goes all in with the whole glum and gloominess of everything. And hey, Josh Lucas’ minor part as her doctor reminds us of just how enjoyable he is on screen (let’s get him back in more movies, ok Hollywood?). So, all in all, She Dies Tomorrow is an admittedly well done, if not sleepy, bit art house distress.
