REVIEW SUMMARY
A well written rom-com character study, Somebody I Used to Know makes for a worthy sophomore effort from director Dave Franco. And while the movie’s overarching plot falls into familiar territory more times than not, it’s the subtle (and not so subtle) diversifications that makes it shine most. Also shining here is our lead, Alison Brie. The amiable actress plays the rom-com tropes with ease, but also adds a welcome amount of nuance to her character. That is to say, she’s believable in the moments of emotional crisis, and also quite funny in the film’s lighter instances. The rest of the cast works well too, with Kiersey Clemons proving to be a particular delight. Yes, the characters have lived-in charm and interesting personalities – making them easy to watch and root for. It also makes them refreshingly different from other in the genre. I won’t go as far to say that Somebody I Used to Know is some new holy grail romantic masterpiece anything. But, it is definitely a movie you’ll want to get familiar with if rom-coms are your thing!
