REVIEW SUMMARY
I guess the redesign worked, as Sonic The Hedgehog is nothing short of high-energy escapist fun for the whole family! Sonic is impeccably likeable here, effortlessly endearing himself to the audience from the get go. The story also works quite well, never taking itself too seriously, while still injecting genuine instalments of thrilling excitement. And while there are a handful of overly juvenile humour (must there always be fart jokes?), there remains some genuine laugh out loud moments. The kooky comedy mostly comes from Carey, who delivers a highly amusing performance showing shades of his older comedic performances (think The Mask and Ace Ventura). And for his part, James Marsden is also enjoyable, while also being completely believable in his interactions with the CGI-ed blue alien hedgehog. The filmmakers do lose points for their blatant rip-off of the ultra slow-mo sequences made famous in the X-Men movies with their mutant speedster Quicksilver. Here, it all comes across as terribly unoriginal. Fortunately, there is more than enough zippy entertainment to send you home happy!
