SYNOPSIS

The documentary follows the large dome that featured a replica of earth's ecosystem called Biosphere 2, constructed in the Arizona desert. Trying to see if it is possible to establish human existence on other planets, eight "biospherians" go to live inside the vivarium, where they face ecological issues and accusations of cult-mentalities.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Spaceship Earth is an interesting account of strange people doing extraordinary things. It’s fascinating and eye opening (especially if you are unaware of the subject matter), but it’s also slightly overstuffed. The film is at its best when looking at the launch of Biosphere 2 and the account of those living inside the bold experiment. Unfortunately, we don’t get there until about the mid-way point, leaving the first part of the film to document this rag-tag group of hippie geniuses as they travel around doing their “own thing” (like building a giant boat for some reason). It’s all very “meaty,” and there are plenty of neat behind the scenes records, but it’s uneven in its ability to keep us enthralled. But, the movie makes for a remarkable look at what people can achieve if they share in a particular vision, while also being a cautionary tale of sorts. Spaceship Earth might not soar as high as you want it to, but it’s an incredible take-off none the less.
