SYNOPSIS

A shy teenager dreams of escaping her small town and pursuing her passion to sing. With the help of an unlikely mentor, she enters a local singing competition that will test her integrity, talent and ambition.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Teen Spirit tells an awfully familiar story in a rather fresh light. Minghella's mix of neon soaked stage settings and vapid rural backdrops work wonders for the narrative, and it's that unique aesthetic that ultimately sets this film apart from all the other "aspiring nobody to superstar" tales. However, the pace is a bit slower than one might expect, and in turn makes for a somewhat sluggish viewing experience. Luckily, Elle Fanning's pitch perfect performance (pun intended) is more than enough to elevate this film to the musical heavens. Fanning is not only authentic in her portrayal of a small town dreamer, but a true knockout at the microphone. She no doubt gives Bradley Cooper a run for his money in the "who knew they could sing so well" department. Perhaps one can even say that "another star is born" in Teen Spirit.
