REVIEW SUMMARY
A tension-filled acting showcase for all involved, The Lesson is a slow-burn thriller worth your time. Ok, so maybe it’s not as smart of a film as it thinks it is, but there’s still plenty of fun intrigue at play. It’s the type of movie that you can really sink your teeth into as the drama unfolds in entertaining fashion. It’s the performances, however, that elevate things to prestige status. And while Daryl McCormack proves once more that he is a capable (and extremely likeable) lead, it’s Richard E. Grant who truly steals the show. Grant straddles the scenery chewing line to perfection, making every scene he is in crackle with clandestine charisma. Julie Delpy also delivers a fun turn here, no doubt relishing the sophisticated yet depraved “sandbox” she gets to play in. In addition to all the frothy fun, the film is also striking to look at. Yep, there’s a real subtle beauty to the cinematography. It might not be in-your-face showy, but it’s one of the most scenic pictures of the year! So trust me, this lesson really is one you’ll be happy you got.
