The Northman is an often-bonkers onslaught of Viking vengeance, one that you will enjoy the hell out of – if that’s your thing of course. First things first, this is a Robert Eggers film, and in such, it looks amazing. In fact, I’ll say this is probably his most visually stunning movie yet. With its vast landscapes and gritty cinematography, there’s so much breathtaking beauty to behold that you can literally take any frame and proceed to hang it on your wall as a work of art. On the story front, you can expect an intense tale of revenge with lots of extreme male bravado. Oh, and gore – lots and lots of violent gore. Yes, it’s all very raw, not to mention surreal at times. Let’s just say that this moody, murky, and muddy movie isn’t going to be called the “feel good story of the year.” In fact, it’s all rather depressing. That’s not to say that there isn’t a payoff though. The film’s fiery tense finale is a main highlight! As are the actors involved, especially Alexander Skarsgard. This man is a total beast here, believable in every conceivable way! And while literally everyone delivers, the seemingly ageless Nicole Kidman serves as marvel in her respective story arc (no spoilers of course). So, if you want to take in an epic tale of vengeance, with a splash of unlikely seduction, then The Northman is most definitely for you!
