REVIEW SUMMARY
This isn’t your mom’s princess story. Le-Van Kiet’s The Princess answers the question, what would a John Wick fairy-tale movie look like? Yep, it’s a bloody and brutal R-rated orgy of action set in a land long ago. But, does it work? Kinda. You see, the concept is mostly a refreshing bit of bonkers fun, but it gets old… fast… like really fast. Our princess, played by actress Joey King, fights off one “bad guy” after another like she’s in some sort of video game making her way to the “final boss” (Dominic Cooper’s character). The problem is that the battles are all very similar, in that they are extremely violent and blood-filled. If you see one combat scene in this movie, you’ve essentially seen them all. And, well, if you are looking for a plot, it’s pretty paper thin. Things are mostly explained in throw away flashback sequences, and we are given very little to go on when it comes to character development. But, for all its faults, there is something to say about the female asskickery on display. And at just an hour and a half, it doesn’t overstay its welcome too much. Don’t let the title fool you (like it did me), this resembles more of a Mortal Kombat film than a “princess tale.” If that’s ok in your book, then let the bodies hit the floor and enjoy!
