REVIEW SUMMARY
Phenomenal designs and high-octane amusement make for the optimum repackaging. Yep, this animated origin story is bursting with everything you’d want out of a Transformers story. It’s got stellar (and frankly, gorgeous) animation, plenty of thrilling action sequences, a plot that takes the material seriously yet still has fun with it, and an incredible string of voice performances. It really does feel like a fresh start for the franchise – fresh being the optimal word here. And while the jargon can be hokey at times, there’s luckily plenty of heart behind it all. There’s an innocence to the film, one that should resonate with younger audiences. That and the themes around liberation, self-determination and sacrifice. Of course, older fans will get their nostalgia kick too. Afterall, the film is clearly borrowing from some classic sources. The newer elements truly sing though, as the film stands as a highly enjoyable buddy comedy for most of its runtime. This thanks to the aforementioned voice talent, including Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry. But, across the board, it’s clear nobody was phoning it in. There’s a passion behind these voices and it shows. Speaking of which, the movie has a lot to show. The colors are vibrant and the animation is as slick as butter. In short, it’s a crowd pleaser. When it comes to Transformers One, I guess you could say there’s more than meets the eye.
