REVIEW SUMMARY

A perfectly cast spectacle of wicked entertainment, Jon M. Chu’s Wicked does not disappoint. In fact, it’s likely to over-deliver on your expectations. Yep, the fantastical fable is that impressively well put together. From the exuberant set designs to the rollicking (and often moving) musical numbers, Wicked is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of fans of the beloved Broadway musical. But that’s the thing – this is a quintessential movie musical through and through. So, if you do not like musicals, or they are “not your thing,” this won’t be changing your mind on them. For everyone else however, it’s an incredible crowd-pleasing good time. A lot of praise needs to go to the cast – especially our two leading ladies – who more than embody the characters. Cynthia Erivo’s ending musical number is legitimate goosebump worthy. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande is the epitome of Glinda – proving that she truly was born to play this role. Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh are also exceptional in their respective roles. What isn’t ideal, however, is the literal “to be continued” that comes up on the screen at the end. Yes, I’m aware this was always meant to be part one of two, but this trend of splitting up movies and throwing a “to be continued” up is very unfulfilling. It’s gotta stop already. It’s also presumptuous that the audience will want to come back for more. But who am I kidding, Wicked will certainly have moviegoers packed in for round two. Myself included.
