REVIEW SUMMARY

Paul Feig’s Last Christmas makes for one merry and messy holiday rom-com. Yep, if you’re looking to kick start your Christmas spirit, this movie is the one to watch. It’s got: a main character dressed as an elf more times than not, a Christmas-themed talent show put on by the homeless, snowy city sidewalk strolls, and all the Christmas trees, tinsel and gaudy red and green decorations you can handle. And let’s not forget the George Michael heavy soundtrack (seriously, the movie pretty much doubles as a commercial for his greatest hits). On the story front, the narrative has a tendency to get a tad scrambled, in that it has an odd mix of silliness and dourness that doesn’t always mesh well. Our two lead characters are enjoyable to watch however, even if the chemistry between them lands just a bit above the “passable” mark. It’s actually Emma Thompson who steals things here with a nearly unrecognizable performance as an overbearing Yugoslavian mother. Is there anything this woman can’t do? So, while Last Christmas the movie surely won’t leave as lasting of an impression as Last Christmas the song, it’ll certainly warm your heart in time for the holidays. Eggnog anyone?
