SYNOPSIS

The world is counting on the highly famous super spy Lance Sterling to protect it from grave threats, who in turn often counts on the technical smarts of young scientist Walter Beckett to fashion great gadgets to accomplish his missions in spite of himself. However, when Beckett attempts to introduce his newest invention of "biodynamic concealment," Sterling accidentally ingests Beckett's experimental work and transforms into a pigeon. He must now find out how he can save the world from a cybernetic madman while being such a small animal.

REVIEW SUMMARY

With its bright colours, vast imagination, and talented stars in the voice cast, Spies In Disguise amounts to a harmless bit of high concept animated fun. Mind you, the overall story and “spy turned into a pigeon” gag is ultimately overplayed by the end, and would probably work better as an animated short rather than a feature length caper. Wait… what’s that? It’s based on a 2009 cartoon short titled Pigeon Impossible? Point proven I suppose. This movie does boast enough comedy for both kids AND adults however, making it less of a chore for the over 8 year-old moviegoing crowd. The entertainment value is also elevated by the voice talents of Will Smith and Tom Holland, who give it their all with delightfully “uppy” performances (no phoning it in here). But while it’s an enjoyable enough shiny distraction, it doesn’t nearly stack up against the many other stellar animated gems we've received throughout the year (Toy Story 4, Abominable, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Missing Link, and so on). Luckily, we can surely use some worthy distractions these days.
